What makes Villa Gai Soleil a great holiday rental

Its size, location and pool!

Hossegor villas are now in as much demand as Biarritz. Gai Soleil has excellent sleeping capacity and a good size pool too. The golf course and tennis courts are a short walk as are the lovely shops, surf boutiques, bars and restaurants found in the town centre.

Similarly, the lagoon can be reached easily on foot - and where you will find a beach & play area for the kids; seafood restaurants; sailing; footpaths for evening strolls or a morning run...

Best for:
A couple of families with teenagers who want the surf. Outside of school holidays it's ideal for groups of friends here for the excellent golf and/or surf.

Suitability for:

  • Toddlers - villa is 'toddler-friendly'; local lagoon beach is good for kids
  • Teenagers - heaven!
  • Reduced mobility - ground floor accommodation

Anything to watch out for?
There is no corridor/hallway in the bedroom wing: to access the living areas you need to use the French doors from each bedroom. See floorplan sketch

The villa accommodation is 'simple chic' rather than luxurious.

Why Hossegor?
An established surfing resort with a very 'cool' vibe. The resort offers great beaches, good shopping, a lovely lagoon and plenty of activities (surf, golf, tennis, cycling, sailing & more).

Comfortable villa with a charming 'beach house' vibe and in highly convenient central location

Built in the 1960s as a colonial style home, Gai Soleil was originally constructed as two separate apartments. The current (English) owners joined them together to create an 'L' shaped villa with a veranda running the length of the property.

The villa effectively still comprises two wings: each bedroom has French doors and it's best to use these to access the living areas rather than walking through the connecting bedrooms.

Living room which integrates dining area and small lounge, decorated in an ivory colourwash. The dining table seats up to 10 persons and there is a corner fireplace which can come in handy for low season stays. Facilities include wi-fi, TV, dvd player, vcr, cd hi-fi plus numerous videos and boardgames. The living room has two sets of French doors leading to the veranda and there's a corner sofa for relaxing.

Modern kitchen opening onto the rear courtyard. Fitted beech units and fully-equipped with all appliances including dishwasher and a proper electric oven and hob.

The washing machine-dryer, utility sink plus extra fridge are in the adjacent utility room. You'll also find cool boxes here for day-trips to the beach, lakes, etc.

Bedroom 1. Double room with access via French doors to the rear courtyard. Plenty of storage, sofa-bed and country-style French bed.

Bedroom 2. Double bedroom with French door access to the veranda and swimming pool. Wardrobe storage.

Bedrooms 1 and 2 share a family bathroom which has bath and shower fitting. There is also a separate WC.

Bedroom 3 -"Rose". Triple bedroom (3x singles) also with access to the veranda. Wardrobe storage. Large cot

Bedroom 4 - "Bleu". Children's room with 3x singles. French door access to the veranda. Wardrobe storage.

Bedroom 5. Bunk beds, again with French door access to the veranda. Wardrobe storage.

Bedrooms 3, 4 and 5 share a shower room and separate WC.

Floors are laminated or tiled.

Out-House / Bedroom 6: The summer den "out house" has twin beds, a chest of drawers, tiled floor, pine-clad ceiling and is lockable. It offers basic 'den' accommodation suitable for two older children.

At the front, next to the pool is a pool house which has in the past been used as a 7th bedroom (sofa-bed or fold-up bed) by agreement with the owners. (Please note that supplements apply to parties of more than 12 persons).

The entrance gates lead into a driveway which curves round to the front of the property. The heated salt-water swimming pool is one of the first sights you see and it will be where guests spend many hours.

To the rear of the property, is a secluded courtyard bordered by shrubs and trees. There are two large patio areas (50m2 in total) with outdoor dining furniture, a BBQ and plancha (hot plate). This is a quiet spot for enjoying dinners outside or reading a book under the shade of the trees or the covered terrace.

The salt-water swimming pool is a good size - 10m x 5m. It is heated by a heat pump and protected by a 1.5m fence and there is a robot cleaner which is set on a timer. The pool is open May-October, and is maintained weekly. There's a solar-powered outdoor shower provided and the pool is protected in accordance with the new regulations.

There is parking for several cars and also a lockable hut for storing surfboards.

This villa has gas central heating and is available for rental all year round.

The area is dominated by its landscape of ocean, lakes and pine forests, creating one big outdoor playground! There are good transport links - the autoroute is 8 kms and this provides easy access north to Bordeaux and south to Biarritz and Spain - and a good choice of regional airports with Biarritz (approx 40 mins) being the closest.

The Local Area

The local region of Sud Landes is typical Aquitaine - endless stretches of sandy beaches buffeted by the Atlantic ocean, vast pine forests punctuated by the occasional lake and criss-crossed by a network of cycle trails.

Capbreton and Hossegor are neighbouring seaside towns which between them offer an appealing contrast. Hossegor is the more famous, largely through its surfing heritage. It's a 'feelgood' place offering boutique shopping, great bars, nightlife and restaurants, world-famous surfing beaches, casino, and a lovely golf course plus a beautiful lagoon for safe bathing.

Like most of the south west coast, the area is something of an outdoor playground. Take your pick from surfing, canoeing, sailing, diving, fishing, cycling, tennis, horse-riding and golf to name a few.

Golfers will enjoy the local course, the 1930s-built Golf d’Hossegor. The traditional club house is also a delight. A short drive up the road is Seignosse, a water and forest monster of a course ranked in Continental Europe’s Top 50. There are other great courses within 45 minutes drive including Moliets and several around Biarritz.

Hossegor regularly holds major surfing competitions; the whole Aquitaine coast is a perfect venue for surfers but here, the presence of an offshore hollow in the sea-bed gives the waves here that extra edge. If you don't fancy a go yourself, just sit on the sea-front with a drink of your choice and watch the surfers ride to shore. Surfing visitors will also want to visit the outlet centre at Soorts where the major brands have factory stores selling boards, accessories and clothing.

Cyclists can enjoy the many safe forest tracks that connect between the towns along the coast. Sailing enthusiasts should head for the marina. Being so close to the Pays Basque border, sporting life also includes the legendary game of pelote; you can watch a game at the fronton in Hossegor.

Capbreton lives in the shadow of Hossegor but it's the place the locals prefer for eating out and for beaches. It's definitely the more authentic of the two, largely because of its fishing port and daily fish market. In fact, the town thrived in the 19th century as a whaling port and this sea-faring heritage is still very much apparent today.

It also has a charming town centre and market. Capbreton is just more French than Hossegor, if you see what we mean. It remains, admirably, something of a French (and Spanish) secret.

Capbreton sea-front is a bustling place, day and evening. You can walk all the way along the marina and sea-front. The jetty, known locally as l'estacade, offers excellent coastal views. There's normally a few locals here trying to catch a fish for supper. It makes for great viewing!

Service: Alternative Aquitaine were excellent to deal with - really helpful in choosing our holiday location and dealing with the booking. However we got communication from the property owners that was less than friendly, and they left a copy of the same instructions in the property - it gave the impression that they really didn't want us in their house! All the rules and warnings combined with the multiple ornaments on every surface mean this is not a property suitable for families with young kids The property name given on the website and communication is not as appears on the house which led to huge confusion when we arrived during a thunderstorm with a full car trying to locate the property. The house and pool were really lovely though and we had a fantastic holiday.

Product: Really nice house and pool but the house is incredibly cluttered and full of ornaments on every surface! The rules and lack of welcome info made it feel like the owners are not keen on having people in their home! Heated pool was not very warm (didn't feel heated). The house is NOT called Villa Gai Soleil - this is the neighbour's house - needs to be changed as really caused an extra bit of hassle and delay when we had a full car keen to find our holiday location. Hossegor the perfect location - thank you Justin!

On 21-Sep-2017 we responded:

Product Comment: Thanks for your feedback and apologies for the slow reply - I thought I had already posted my response but it was only in draft! As it happens I will be at the house next week and will talk to the owners about any improvements that can be made. I know the house really well, it is in a great location and has rented well year after year.
