Reviews

2018 will be our first season renting Beaufleury so we don't have any of our own reviews just yet. However, Julie has previously rented directly to guests and we'd like to share her feedback...

"We had a very good week at the property. The house has a lot of character, composed of large rooms well arranged. The decoration of the house brings an additional charm combining modernity and rustic side. The beds are comfortable. The owners are very friendly and attentive to their tenants."

"This was a truly amazing property. Julie was very welcoming and was always happy to provide recommendations for local beaches and places to visit.  This house is a true gem and with wonderful hosts you would be guaranteed a fantastic holiday."

"We really enjoyed Beaufleury. Well laid out and clean. There was a local shop in the village where everybody went and only French was spoken. The local river was brilliant with canoeing and cycling. We went on several trips in Basque Country and a tasting trip to San Sebastian."

"We enjoyed every hour of this vacation with a lovely renovated house and wonderful weather. When you love big waves, good food and nice people you must book this house :-)"

"We enjoyed every minute in this beautiful and well-maintained beautiful house in quiet Saint Jean de Marsacq. If you love old houses and their special character, you should not miss this one! The owners did a great job in renovating this old master's house. The very friendly owners and their pets provided a very good service during our stay. Numerous beaches and so many other interesting places and cities can be reached by car in less than 30 minutes."

Accommodation

Beautiful French Home in Character Stone, Built in 1900 and Completely Renovated

'Beaufleury' is a beautiful, character property that Francophiles will adore. Constructed in 1900 the house has been entirely renovated but with its original features retained. Original doors and windows, stone and parquet floors, high ceilings and generously-sized rooms - Beaufleury oozes authenticity and charm.

The property is a family home, lived in by its owners for 10 months of the year. Therefore the property comes very well-equipped throughout and it has a very relaxing, 'lived in' ambience.

Inside Ground Floor

The ground floor space is arranged very well and features an attractive living room and 'modern traditional' kitchen.

The spacious living room at the front of the house is naturally lit and has a feature parquet floor.

The lovely kitchen has direct access to the pool/garden/terraces and includes island unit, pantry, double butler's sink, a beauiful wooden breakfast/dining table for 8 and there's also a laundry room too. As the photos demonstrate, the kitchen is an attractive blend of modern and traditional.

There is a handy WC on the ground floor.

A spiral staircase leads from the living room to the first floor.

Inside First Floor

All bedrooms and bathrooms are on the first floor and feature original wood floors, windows and doors. The decor is tasteful and very much in keeping with with style of the house.

  • Bedroom 1 - double bed, wood flooring, ensuite shower, WC, and basin. The ensuite is semi-open to the bedroom
  • Bedroom 2 - double bed, wood flooring
  • Bedroom 3 - double bed with ensuite shower, WC, and basin. Wooden floor and furnishings painted in soft cream colours. The ensuite is semi-open to the bedroom
  • Bedroom 4 - children's room with two sets of bunk beds and a mezzanine area

Family bathroom shared by Bedrooms 2 and 4 includes roll-top bathtub, separate shower & WC.

Outside

  • The 8 x 3 m swimming pool is heated and protected by security fence for the safety of younger kids
  • There are two covered terraces which offer shade plus space for eating outside (BBQ provided)
  • Enclosed garden with lawn area for games

Just a reminder that the owners (Julie, her husband Pete, their son plus their pet cats & dogs) take up residence in the small barn on the grounds. This space is entirely private and guests have exclusive use of the pool and gardens. Julie is on hand for advice on local places to eat and visit as well as any maintenance queries that may crop up during your stay. Guests who have stayed here before have really appreciated Julie's assistance.

Location

St Jean de Marsacq is a small village in the Sud Landes countryside of south west France, less than half an hour to the famous beaches of Hossegor and 45 minutes drive to Biarritz airport. Beaufleury is on the outskirts of the village but you can walk to the handy boulangerie / small shop in 5-10 minutes. The immediate neighbourhood is low-density housing and open fields. This area of France is famous for its long sandy beaches, pine forests and quiet countryside. It's a fantastic base to explore the area - Biarritz & St Jean de Luz, The Pyrenees mountains and the north coast of Spain too (San Sebastian and Bilbao).

Day Trip Ideas

The local beaches of Hossegor will be the major attraction but we recommend taking some time to explore and enjoy this distinctive corner of France.

  • Spend the day in Spain, in San Sebastian. Have some time at the spectacular Playa Concha and stick around into the evening for the city's legendary pinxtos (Basque tapas). San Seb is perfection!
  • Enjoy a day of nature in the stunning Pyrenees. It's only an hour's drive into the mountains for a day's hiking, cycling or wildlife spotting. Younger kids will enjoy the funicular train ride so the summit of La Rhune.
  • Experience the laid-back glamour and sophistication of Biarritz, the most famous resort on the west coast and the perfect seaside city. As well as fabulous beaches, there are plenty of sights to see and a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants.
  • Just a little further down the coast from Biarritz is St Jean de Luz, a beautiful fishing port and seaside resort with it striking Basque architecture. The glorious arc of sandy beach is perfect for younger ones as it's protected by the breakwater at the head of the bay.
  • For a cultural day out we recommend taking a tour of the French Basque Country and it's picture-postcard villages such as Sare and Ainhoa.

The Local Area

A small village with pretty church plus a handy boulangerie/grocery store ideal for fresh bread and croissants. The village petanque court is where the locals meet late afternoon and evening in the summer - it's a lovely French scene characteristic of the south west region. A short distance from the village you can enjoy canoeing on the River Adour.

St Vincent de Tyrosse is the nearest town where there's a range of shops including large supermarket. In the summer it's well worth an evening trip to watch Course Landaise - it's the local form of bull-fighting but it's humane and more of a 'circus' performance.

Hossegor and its famous surfing beaches are just 25 minutes' drive. It's a superb resort with a stunning salt water tidal lagoon in the heart of the town which offers sandy beaches and safe bathing for little ones, saliling, SUP and water sports plus cycling and jogging trails too. There are numerous excellent shops, bars and restaurants to sample. As well as an extensive network of cycle trails, there are two fabulous golf courses and a big tennis centre too.

Neighbouring Capbreton has a sparkling marina lined with seafood restaurants whilst Hossegor's neighbour to the north - Seignosse - has a water park. There's also another water park at Labenne Ocean, a few minutes south of Capbreton.

It's really the beaches that are the major draw of this part of France. The sandy beaches of Aquitaine stretch unbroken from Biarritz in the south all the way to the Arcachon where there's a brief - and beautiful - interruption at the Bay of Arcacon and then the sand continues all the way to the Gironde estuary at Soulac.

This is a good base for exploring further afield includng day trips in the Pyrenees mountains, Biarritz and St Jean de Luz, the pretty villages of French Basque Country and visiting Spain too - San Sebastian in particular.
