Why the bassin d'Arcachon?
The bassin d'Arcachon is known for its reinvigorating micro-climate - the blend of pine forest and ocean air - and lovely natural light. Examples of stunning architecure abound, from the elegant villas on the eastern side to fisherman's cabane-inspired chalets on the west. It is an area of unspoilt natural beauty too (the coastline is protected), especially at high tide when the clear still waters of the Bay stretch for miles. For the active, it is a superb destination for sailing, surfing, fishing, cycling, horse-riding, bird-watching. Foodies will enjoy oyster- & wine-tasting too. Or just relax, unwind & enjoy.

Accommodation

Elegant, historic, lovingly-renovated Italian-style villa in a stunning, unspoilt waterfront setting

Entrance
The house is discreetly located and cannot be viewed until the gates are open. Then entering Villa La Tosca for the first time is like entering an oasis - the striking beauty of first the house, then the garden and finally the views of the Bay: it's immediately obvious this is somewhere very special.

The palm-tree lined drive leads to a parking area at the rear of the property with space for 4-5 cars. A separate building here is the concierge office. The overall plot is 4500m2. A pebbled path runs round to the grounds; a flight of stone steps leads up to a veranda and main entrance.

Interior
The entire house was renovated with much love and without compromise in 2009. Inside the décor is contemporary, using pale, neutral colours, and very high quality throughout. Natural materials - natural wood floor, bamboo screens - are used extensively. High ceilings, tall windows, attractive French doors connecting rooms and with the western veranda, make it feel light, airy and comfortable. Rooms are very generously-sized without feeling empty or austere - this is very much a home for people to feel comfortable in. It is furnished in the same way - tasteful, chic, designed for good, relaxing living. Total interior space comes to 900m2.

To the left of the entrance the state-of-the-art kitchen is superbly equipped, designed for amateur as well as professional chefs (the latter can be arranged). It includes double oven & range, all appliances (heating drawer, deep fryer, coffee machine, dishwasher, microwave, tumble dryer), and an attractive two-way fireplace shared with the dining room opposite.

The dining room is spacious, contemporary, ideal for a romantic dinner, a relaxed buffet or something more formal. Two sets of French doors open onto the veranda and offer views over the garden and Bay.

French doors connect to the generously-proportioned salon with open fireplace & bar area. Two armchairs and a set of stylish sofas are usually arranged into two comfortable seating/reading areas, two sets of French doors providing direct access onto the veranda on the western, Bay-facing side.

(The room can also also be arranged for receptions - extending into the dining room and veranda - holding up to 80 people, or 160 using a marquee in the garden.)

At this level there is also:

  • a wood-panelled library with marble fireplace, a perfect retreat for a moment's privacy
  • a home cinema with 52 inch flat screen TV and start of the art DVD system; (this room can seat up to 30 and can also be used for a business seminar, conference or presentation)

Altogether there are eight double bedrooms, each one with its own high quality spa-style en-suite bathroom or shower room, flat screen TV and Internet access point. Five of the bedrooms have views over the bassin d'Arcachon and Cap Ferret. Each is attractively-furnished with high quality bedding, and colourful, contemporary fabrics; three contain original fireplaces. The bedrooms are arranged as follows:

  • Ground floor: an attractive double with en-suite shower rooom adapted for a wheelchair user, and with direct access to the garden
  • First floor: three charming bedrooms, two with views of the Bay & each opening onto an elegant balcony: one double bedroom with dressing area ('l'Eau vive'); two further double bedrooms ('le Bassin' & 'le Foret')
  • Second floor: 'la Vue' has 360 degree floor-to-ceiling windows offering breath-taking views; 'le Confort' is a very contemporary bedroom with skylights offering a view of the stars if desired
  • Lower level: two further double bedrooms with ensuite bath/shower rooms, one with a kitchenette ('la Studio') - a spacious room with French doors opening on to teh back garden, ideal for a nanny or au pair wanting some independence, and 'la Chaudiere' which has less natural light than the upper floors and is often used as spillover sleeping accommodation, eg for younger guests or people staying for just 1 or 2 nights.

Gardens
Outside the beautifully-kept gardens contain 2 fountains, ecological pool, Balinese beds & hammock. An ornamental stream - sourced 80m down - meanders around the grounds, crossed at one point by a small wooden bridge.

The rectangular, naturally-filtered, spring-fed pool measures 15m x 4m and is protected by an alarm. With its filter basins and natural regeneration, looks like a natural lake in the park. The water is filtered and regenerated through the plants, rocks, pebbles. Guests can relax in the green waters of the pool, which come from natural sources and leave their skin smooth, soft, silky ... or relax in one of our comfortable lounges overlooking the deck with 180 degree views of the garden and Bay.  The terrace is also a site for cocktails, or romantic candle-lit dinners under the stars.

The lawns are extensive, and include a pétanque (boules) court for some lively competition. Also available are croquet, table tennis, trampoline, table football, volleyball net.

At the bottom of the garden a heritage gate leads through the century-old stone wall and, at low tide, directly onto the beach of fine sand or, at high tide, into the Bay.

The Local Area

The eastern shore of the Bay of Arcachon is an area of genuine natural beauty: grand villas peeping through the pine & tamaris trees which line the shore, oyster-farming villages, the occasional marina. The atmosphere is calm & refined.

The characterful local villages of Taussat & Lanton are easily explored on foot or by bike. There is plenty to explore further afield as well - why not sail or take a water taxi to:

  • Arcachon, known for the Winter Town's distinctive architecture, & enjoyable town walk up to the Belvedere which offers superb views over the town and beyond
  • Cap Ferret, a chic, laid-back seaside town, popular with French VIPs and celebrities, and great fun to explore on bikes (which can be hired by the jetty). Head for l'Horizon Atlantic beach for an energising plunge in the rolling surf
  • Piraillan & Le Canon, two charming oyster-farming villages on the western side of the bay, known for their narrow lanes of brightly-painted cabanes
  • Parc Ornithologique du Teich, an area of protected wetland for migrating birds on the south side of the Bay
  • Dune de Pyla, at 120m it is Europe's highest sand dune, located 5 kms south of Arcachon

For city culture Bordeaux is unmissable - a thorough make-over has brought out the character of its striking 18th century buildings, added 21st century touches (including gleaming tram system), all combining to make Bordeaux a modern European gem (and UNESCO world heritage site). Strolling around the cafés, bistrots & boutiques of the Quartier St Pierre is a delight.

The Bay is also a natural playground offering an extraordinary choice of activities - we and Villa la Tosca can help with bookings, trips, equipment for:

  • Sailing: several local clubs with boats availble for hire
  • Fishing: try shrimping around the Bay's sandbars and muddy water at low tide, or in the fast, shallow waters of the Leyre river
  • Wakeboarding, jet-skiing, surfing: adrenaline sports are well catered for, several schools operate locally
  • Golf: there are 20 courses within an hour's drive, including the highly rated Golf du Médoc, and PGA Championship course at Gujan-Mestras
  • Tennis: there are several local clubs within a 15 minute drive
  • Biking & hiking: several bikes are available for guests' use at Villa la Tosca, ideal for exploring the 84 km Arcachon Bay Tour route which runs from Cap Ferret to the Dune de Pyla.  The stretches through the pine forest are unforgettable. Hikers will enjoy exploring sections of the route on foot too, taking in each of the Bay's 20 or so oyster ports as well as the many natural sites.

This is just a taster. Let us know what you would like to do, Alternative Aquitaine & Villa Maria can make it happen.
