Anything to watch out for?
Bidart is a very pretty Basque village with town hall, fronton & restaurants. Distinctive Basque architecture, fabulous coastline and the Pyrenees in the background. The beach offers excellent surfing and body-boarding too. Chic, cosmopolitan Biarritz is just 4 kms away.
Superb, luxurious villa with infinity pool & panoramic sea & mountain views
The house is set back in large plot (1300m2), in a raised position off a quite one-way residential street. A short drive leads up to the house and entrance.
Several steps lead up to the front door which opens into a large entrance hall with separate WC. Off to the left through glass doors is the main sitting room. Off to the right is a double bedroom with ensuite shower room. (This bedroom is at the front of the house.)
Straight down the hall from the main entrance is the large open plan dining room and kitchen, which take full advantage of the stunning views right over the ocean.
The kitchen is fully equipped (2 dishwashers!) and has all the mod cons. Blue painted wood cupboard doors, loads of work surface, island with the large double cooker and induction hob.
Upstairs in a gallery above the kitchen, again overlooking the ocean, is a second sitting room with large TV. On the same floor are a further 3 double bedrooms, 2 of which have views over the ocean and very large bathrooms with huge walk in showers and double sinks. One of them also has a bath with low windows to enjoy the views whilst soaking in the tub - heaven!
Balconies off both double rooms on the front of the house. There is also a twin room with small ensuite shower room and another smaller double also with shower. The bedrooms all have very comfortable thick mattresses, lots of pillows and cushions and throws - very much a smart hotel bedroom style, with a lovely personal feel.
Up a further small flight of stairs is the final large double bedroom suite which also has a mini sitting room area, balcony, large bathroom and walk-in wardrobe and spectacular views.
The kitchen opens on to the mid-sized sloping garden. There is a gate at the top of the garden that joins the footpath with direct access to the beach below. Off the side of the dining area are double doors leading out on to the deck overlooking the infinity pool and a BBQ area.
The heated infinity pool measures 8m x 3.5m. It has an electric rolling cover and a salt filter.
5 bedrooms with kingsize double beds, one with twin beds which can be joined to make a double
6 ensuites: 4 shower rooms, 2 with bath + shower
8m x 3.5m heated infinity pool, protected by electric rolling cover
Additionjal equipment includes: juicer, Nespresso machine, B&W sound system, surround-sound TV, surfboard store, and secret lookout.
Villa d'Uhabia is located in a quiet residential area on a one way street 300m from Bidart centre, in an elevated position above the Plage du Centre.
Bidart itself is an attractive Basque seaside village with lovely traditional feel.
Nearest village / town: Bidart
Nearest beach: Bidart plage du centre - in front!
Boulangerie: Bidart 300m
Restaurant: Bidart 300m
Market: Bidart - Saturday morning market + Thursday night market in July & August
Bidart is a charming Basque village-by-the-sea - a church, a fronton (an outdoor court for playing Pelota, similar to squash), a little sleepy but pretty and characterful. It sits on the hill above the Atlantic, on the edge of a cliff, at the highest point on the Basque coastline. There is a little supermarket, bakery, cafés, newsagents, gift shops and a couple of bars and restaurants.
Its cliff-top chapel Ste-Madeleine is remarkable - you won't see many smaller churches anywhere in the world. The views from the coast path are fantastic - there aren't many places where you see mountains meet the ocean.
Neighbouring Guéthary is a similar treasure, a traditional fishing port, large villas and small houses rise in tiers from the seafront.
There are plenty of life-guarded beaches to choose between - almost all offering surf equipment hire and tuition on the excellent waves. (A private surf guide is available - please enquire.) Bidart is often a venue for surf competitions. Out in front the Plage du Centre has volleyball and pétanque courts. South of Bidart, Plage de l'Uhabia offers summer activities and games for children. Plage de Parlementia offers access to the Phare de Koskenia (lighthouse) from Guéthary.
There are plenty of good golfing options nearby. We recommend buying a Biarritz golf pass, which entitles you to play at Arcangues, Bayonne, Biarritz, Ilbarritz, Moliets or Seignosse. Nearby Ilbarritz provides spectacular ocean-side golf (9 holes, par 32). In 1998 it was chosen as the most beautiful nine holes in France.
Beautiful coastal walks link the coves from Bidart through Guéthary and St-Jean-de-Luz, all the way to Hendaye on the edge of Spain. Nearby there is also horse-riding through forests, or along the beach.
Festivals: June to September see festivals and events all along this stretch of coast: horse-riding & surfing competitions, basque culture (especially the Fete de Bayonne in August), art, jazz, wine, beer, film and dance.
Markets: there's Biarritz's fabulous Les Halles covered market (every day), antiques markets in Anglet and Bayonne, plus Bidart's own Saturday morning market in the village centre.
Restaurants: the cuisine in this corner of France & Spain is some of Europe's finest. We can guide you on where to eat.
After the wilderness years of the 1980s, Biarritz is again a thriving, contemporary seaside destination. Celebrities and sports stars are flooding back to live in the region, turning their back on the Côte d'Azur. It mixes an affluent elderly population with a steady flow of well-dressed surfers plus a sprinkling of super-rich jetsetters on top. A compact and stylish town, Biarritz really does have something for everyone...famous beaches, museums, fine restaurants, boutiques, casino, golf courses, horse-riding and the south west's famous spa and thalassotherapy centres.
