As the photos demonstrate, the villa enjoys a tranquil setting with fine views of the rolling Pays Basque countryside. There is a country lane that runs past the house but it is infrequently used. The nearest amenities are found in Souraide, a typically Basque village with the basic shops and a little golf course too, in fact. Cambo-les-Bains, the thermal spa town, is just a 10 minute drive whilst the coastal resorts of Biarritz and St Jean de Luz are half an hour in the car.

Pretty village centre featuring a fronton court (naturellement!), church, two hotel-restaurants and half-timbered houses including some charming examples of Pays Basque architecture dating to the 17th century. The town also boasts a pretty 18 hole golf course, ideal for a holiday round without the crowds. Neighbouring village Espelette is more famous thanks to its annual pepper festival (October) which draws coach loads of tourists from all over France & Spain!
Cambo les Bains
Cambo is ideally situated between the seaside glamour of Biarritz and the majestic Pyrenees mountain chain. The town itself is famous foor the 'Villa Arnaga', the stunning former home of Edmond Rostand, author of Cyrano de Bergerac. A visit to the house & grounds is a 'must do' on your stay here. Cambo has plenty to more to offer visitors including a lovely thermal spa, a nice selection of shops & restaurants, cinema & theatre, tennis courts, public pool and verdant park. There is also a very handy train station for a trip to Bayonne or Biarritz. The weekly market is held on Friday.
After the wilderness years of the 1980s, this town is back in fashion. Celebrities and sports stars are flooding back to live in the region turning their back on the Côte d'Azur. Biarritz is an eclectic place; it somehow manages to mix an affluent elderly population with a steady flow of well-dressed surfers plus a sprinkling of super-rich jetsetters on top. A compact and stylish town, Biarritz really does have something for everyone...famous beaches, museums, fine restaurants, boutiques, casino, golf courses, horse-riding and the south west's famous spa and thalassotherapy centres.
St Jean de Luz
Whether its beaches, boutiques, culture, restaurants or festivals you are looking for, this town is hard to beat. Stylish but without the pretence of the Riviera, St Jean is an authentic and colourful seaside town and working fishing port. It has plenty to offer discerning visitors of all ages. In particular, this is a great place to eat out - St Jean de Luz is recognised as the capital of Basque cuisine and is noted for its seafood (it is one of Rick Stein’s favourite places).
The countryside is a delight; the rolling green hills are popular with the few British visitors that the region receives. The foothills rise to the mountains of the Pyrénées which are home to dozens of hiking trails including the famous coast-to-coast GR10 track. Eagles and wild horses roam the mountains and, if you're unlucky, you might bump into a brown bear (only 6 individual bears are known to exist and they live much further east in the high Pyrénées) - this is one of Europe’s most exotic wildlife locations. Bird-watchers will be kept busy twitching. The Pyrénées also provide thrill-seekers with a range of extreme sports from white-water rafting to paragliding. The mountain landscapes are at their finest in the Haut-Béarn region.
Service: property offering and communication service
Product: though the cleaning can always be to a better standard [a mid week cursory clean would also be beneficial, especially on a property of this size]. Local contact Julia also excellent [especially when there was a wifi issue]. They could benefit from a BluRay and / or UK TV feed in the main lounge
Product Comment: June 2017: Just by way of an update, a new cleaning team is in place this season. Glad that you liked the property, it's one of my favourites.
