What makes Villa Pilat a great holiday rental
A high quality summer house, spacious and private, with a superb pool and terrace area. If you can drag yourself away from the pool and outside bar, the sandy beach of Pilat Plage is no more than 5 minutes' walk.

Best for:
Two families sharing or an extended family groups or a ahndful of couples. Rentals like this don't come cheap, so sharing the cost will make it more affordable. This area of Arcachon is distinctly 'upmarket' without being pretentious.

Suitability for:

  • Toddlers - heated pool is a bonus (and the pool has a cover).
  • Teenagers - lots of space; a good area for teens to roam independently, with lots of activities too.
  • Reduced mobility - no bedrooms are accessible without negotiating several steps.

Anything to watch out for?

No.

Why Arcachon-Pyla?
Pilat Plage is a sought-after, leafy residential district of Arcachon, approx. 5 kms south of the main town, with its own stretch of beach, restaurants, etc, known for its famous sand-dune, Europe's largest - 100m high! Arcachon is an all year round sea-side town that's very popular with French families: it's a manageable size, a great choice of shops, bars, restaurants, and attractive promenade with views over to the Cap Ferret peninsula. The Bay of Arcachon is a fascinating, natural area to explore, and is one of our favourite Aquitaine destinations.

Accommodation

Superior west-facing summer house with heated swimming pool

A stylish villa that has undergone a complete programme of renovations to provide a very high quality holiday home, and an excellent new addition to this owner's growing portfolio of holiday rentals in the Pyla & Le Moulleau districts of Arcachon (all of which can be found on our website).

Originally constructed in the 1970s, Villa Pilat offers extremly modern, high quality and tasteful accommodation in a sought-after loaction (the Parisiens love Arcachon, particularly the districts heading south towards the Dune). Total floorspace 240m2.

The accommodation is arranged on two levels: the villa entrance is at ground level and this is where the living room is situated.

Ground floor:

Location

A very peaceful and leafy residential location, extremely private yet within easy reach of the local sandy beach and amenities. Pilat Plage is one of a handful of very sought-after districts within Arcachon which is very well know to well-heeled French yet virtually unknown on our side of 'le Manche'. This is a very 'well-to-do' area of chic bistrots, boutiques and sailing clubs. Hop on bikes and cycle along the water's edge all the way into Arcachon or head south to the mighty Dune du Pilat. Just inland, a short journey through the pine forests and you'll arrive at the great lake of Cazaux-Sanguinet, a beautiful spot for watersports or a day of pure relaxation.

The Local Area

Arcachon's southern districts such as Pyla, Pereire and Le Moulleau, are sought-after by the French - each offers quieter beaches than those found in central Arcachon and some very good restaurants too. for those with smaller children and a lot of equipment, easier car-parking. Pereire beach is regarded by locals as the most attractive around.

Ferries run from Arcachon and Le Moulleau to a host of destinations including Cap Ferret, a stylish resort on the other side of the Basin at the point of the peninsula of the Presqu'Ile de Cap Ferret. The 'petit train' runs from close to the jetty on Cap Ferret over to the magnificent rollers of the Atlantic beach on the other side of the peninsula, a wonderful trip, especially for children. Or, without kids, why not have dinner and return on the late evening ferry?

The Banc d’Arguin sits at the foot of the famous Dune du Pilat, 5 kms south of Arcachon and close to the house. A journey to the summit (try it without the staircase provided!) is a must; sunrise and sunset are the best times.

Back in Arcachon, the Parc Mauresque offers plenty of shade to cool off in the shade, and a chance to watch the locals play petanques and enjoy the view over to the Ville d'Eté (the summer town, the main resort district of Arcachon) below and to the sea beyond. A fascinating walk leads from the Parc to the 'Belvedere', a viewing platform with magnificent 360 degree views of the town.

The Arcachon Basin is packed full of oyster farms and you will have no difficulty finding these delicacies to dine on in one of the town’s many seafood restaurants. Or head to Gujan-Mestras (France's oyster-farming capital) or one of the villages on the Presqu'Ile (l'Herbe is recommended) and 'déguster' a few at the water's edge direct from ostréiculteur (oyster farmer).

The Bay is also home to wide variety of birdlife and consequently is a popular birdwatching destination. In fact, there are birdwatching reserves at nearby Parc Ornotholigique du Teich and Ile aux Oiseaux (Bird Island) in the basin which can be visited by boats that depart from the Arcachon jetties.

As a change from the sea-side, a little further down the coast there is bathing in Sanguinet and Biscarrosse lakes - with no ocean currents to worry about and the forest setting providing plenty of shelter, these are especially popular with families with young children.
