What is it for?
Before or on your arrival, you will be asked for a returnable deposit in case of damages, breakages or losses to the property or its equipment, furniture, furnishings, etc. The security deposit is also there to guard against additional cleaning requirements should they be necessary.
How much, and how do I pay?
The amount ranges from £150 to £2,000 for the most prestigious properties. The average is around £500. The method of payment varies across suppliers:
- on-site on arrival, held on credit card
-held on credit card by Alternative Aquitaine as an appointed booking agent for the supplier
- cheque payable to the owner
Cheques are occasionally cashed, but more often not, and may required by the owner in advance of your arrival. Please write your name and address on the back of the cheque.
The deposit will be returned either on departure, or, soon after departure. The average is 14 days and, at the very most, within 4 weeks afterwards.
How to avoid problems.
You must inform the owner of any breakages or damages before you leave, to avoid ambiguity later. For this reason, we also advise clients to be 'checked-out' of the property by the owner or their staff before leaving.
Please note that security against cleaning costs will be included in the damage deposit unless separately specified in a 'cleaning deposit'. It is therefore imperative that your property and its equipment (notably barbecues) are left clean & tidy, otherwise you will be charged. In some cases, you can opt for an exit clean, which will generally be payable locally to the house manager or cleaner. Even if you choose to reserve an exit clean, you will still need to perform some basic duties, such as emptying the bins.
If there is a dispute between the client and accommodation supplier regarding damages or cleanliness of the property on departure, we regret that it is not possible for Alternative Aquitaine to enter any such dispute (as your contract is with the supplier of the property, rather than with us).
