Our top reasons why Biarritz is the best alternative destination for a winter break

"I know of no other place more charming and magnificent than Biarritz”. Victor Hugo

Biarritz has long been a destination for discerning European travellers.  Nestled close to the border between France and Spain, perched on the Atlantic coast and with the Pyrenees as its backdrop, the city that has it all is just a short flight from the UK.  Since its heyday as a holiday destination for European royalty in the 19th century, the town has been reinvented several times, moulded to fit the styles and indulgences of the times, but always retaining a very distinctive identity. Today, Biarritz is a dynamic and stylish hub of 21st century culture and sophistication.

Although not an obvious destination for a winter break, the winter months, and particularly Christmas, is a delightful time of year to visit. Without the summer crowds, and with the added festive sparkle, the town feels very jolly and French, but always with a reminder that it is, in fact, resolutely Basque. You can enjoy the markets, restaurants and shops (what better excuse to fill your suitcase in the Galeries Lafayette or the designer stores than the simple fact that it’s Christmas?!) and treat yourself to some winter indulgence.

Walk along the miles of La Cote des Basques beach, feeling invigorated by the brisk winds blowing off the Atlantic, then spend time in the casino, spas and restaurants. From December 1st 2016 to January 5th 2017, "Biarritz en Lumières" creates a staggering evening spectacle of lights, giving the perfect excuse for an evening stroll with the locals.

Biarritz is the heart of the French Basque Country, a distinctive environment with its own unique culture, cuisine and history - a crossroads of sorts with an abundance of experiences for all tastes.  Just a short drive takes you to the typical Basque villages of Sare, Ascain and Ainhoa. Travel a little further and you reach the Spanish border and the 2016 European City of Culture, San Sebastian.

Alternative Aquitaine offer some gorgeous apartments in the heart of Biarritz, renovated in a contemporary style and just a few steps from the markets, restaurants and shops of the historic city centre.
