Great Ocean Roads - Basque Country

St Jean de Luz

St Jean de Luz Writing in the Sunday Times, Vincent Crump picks six of the most spectacular driving routes in Europe, including our very own Basque Country. The following is an extract from his article which appeared in the ST 7/7/13. "Driving holidays come no more glamorous than in the beautiful Basque Country, where Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz retain the charisma that Nice and Cannes have lost. Begin on the grandes plages of Biarritz, looking much like it did when Queen Victoria popped by for a paddle in the 1880s. Just south of the town is Guethary, with Basque houses timbered in red, white and green, and sizzling scallops on the beachfront at Restaurant Harotzen-Costa. Soon after, St-Jean-de-Luz is a stylish overnight berth. Cross the border and first comes the party town of San Sebastian, then Zumaia, Lekeitio, Mundaka - the capital of Spanish surfing - and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Finally, you're in Bilbao and the Guggenheim Museum, arguably the single most exciting cultural experience in Europe."
