What makes Les Chats Perchés a great holiday rental

Les Chats Perchés are just so different - great fun, nicely finished, sensibly-priced, free-range chickens providing your eggs each morning, and all in a fantastic location 500m from the ocean. Labenne-Océan has lots of amenities, walks & cycle paths, plus a lovely beach with views of the Pyrenees. Hossegor, Capbreton & Biarritz are all within a short drive. A lovely way to enjoy a typical Aquitaine destination.

Best for:

Anyone looking for good-value, well-equipped accommodation close to the beach, cycle paths & local amenities. Perfect for a couple plus 1 or 2 children, or two couples.

Suitability for:

  • Toddlers - the steps and balcony height may not be suitable - if you have concerns we think it would best to avoid this one. Kids generally will absolutely love this place though
  • Teenagers - beach & local activities would give teenagers plenty to do
  • Reduced mobility - flight of steps up to the cabins make it unsuitable

Anything to be aware of?

The chalets are quite small inside - 35m2 - though with the doors open on to the terrace (38m2) it feels more spacious. The owner's property is in the grounds, and is available if needed but will otherwise leave you in privacy. The chalets are approx. 5-6m apart, separated by a terrace and fence - you won't cross paths too much but equally it's a nice place for two families to holiday together.

Why Labenne-Ocean?
Labenne-Ocean is a small seaside town in the pine forest a few kilometres south of Capbreton & Hossegor. It has a lovely sandy beach with a couple of cafés at the top of the dune, forest walks and cycle paths, lots of local activities (surfing, canoeing, horse-riding, tennis etc), and is well-located for days out to Biarritz, San Sebastian, Pyrenees, etc.

Accommodation

Attractive & well-equipped pine cabins

The Les Chats Perchés are true originals - two detached chalets built on a 5m platform on stilts, surrounded by pine trees, sharing the plot with the owner's house but independently accessed. The chalets are approx. 5-6m apart, separated by a terrace and fence. Pine trees and tall bamboo provide some screening from the owner's property which is approx 10-15m away. In terms of layout one is a mirror image of the other.

Entrance
The chalets are reached via a secure gate and track; each has parking for 1 or 2 cars underneath. They are in an attractive setting of tall bamboo and pine trees, next to a good-sized area of garden (shared with the owner). Each chalet has its own staircase leading up to its own terrace.

(There is also an outdoor shower for rinsing off after the beach.)

Terrace
There is a 38m2 terrace, with lovely views of the garden, bamboo and forest all around - green, natural and relaxing.  There is a covered veranda just outside the chalet with low-level wooden seating for four, plus low level table. The terrace extends around either side of the chalet, uncovered, and makes lovely sunbathing spots.

Interior - living area
Double patio doors open into the main living area comprising a sitting area, and dining table. The kitchen area is a good size, atractive fittings and and includes a small fridge/freezer, dishwasher, four-ring hob, combi microwave-grill-oven, coffee machine.

In the sitting area a corner sofa seats 3 comfortably around a smart coffee table, a cushioned stool seats one more. There is also a wall-mounted flat-screen TV with some international channels.

The central dining table is a good size, a nice piece of wooden furniture, with seating for four.

The décor is modern, fresh, with a print and a hanging which reveal the French owner's passion for old English sports cars! The equipment and fittings used are contemporary and very good quality throughout.

Interior - bedrooms & bathroom

Sliding doors from the living room lead to the rear half of the chalet which houses the central bathroom (with shower, basin, and also housing the washing machine), and two double bedrooms, one on either side of the bathroom.

The bedrooms are fairly small - approx. 10m2 - and contain a good quality four poster queen-sized bed (140cm x 190cm), reading lights, shelves and wall-mounted clothes hanging.

Garden
The garden is a good-size; the pines, palm trees and tall bamboo make it feel lush & tropical. A few chickens roam free-range - the owner is happy for guests to help themselves to eggs! There is a badminton court plus boules playing area.

Overall we think les Chats Perchés offer a very original, charming take on Aquitaine holiday accommodation.

NB Some may be curious about the name Les Chats Perchés. Often a play on words in French involves switching syllables around - swapping "Les Chats" gives... Chalets! Perché means perched (up high), so there you have it - Les Chats Perchés.

The Local Area

Labenne-Ocean is towards the tip of the southern Landes coast, on the border between the Spanish-influenced Basque country and the Gascon Landes in an area known as the Pays de Seignanx. Biarritz, Bayonne and Hossegor-Capbreton are all close by. As well as cycling, golf, surfing (and all manner of other watersports), horse-riding it is an area with lovely seafood, and a laid-back culture and style - we love it!

Labenne-Ocean's beach is a lovely wide stretch of sand with with a couple of snack bars, bar and restaurant. Like the rest of the Cote d'Argent, the beach gets some fantastic waves, and is supervised in summer. The centre of Labenne-Ocean offers good amenities: boulangerie, local tabac, surf shop, small spa and a handful of local restaurants.

Service: Good communication at all times.

Product: The property was delightful, it made for a fabulously relaxing holiday. Philippe was lovely, giving us eggs from his hens and pickings from his veg garden, nothing was too much trouble for him. The chalet was well-equipped, clean and just right for us (2 adults, 2 small children).

Service: Very slick operation.

Product: The host Philippe Delhoume was amazingly kind and helpful. Beautiful log cabins set in a lovely garden BUT only suitable for 2 people ( + maybe a child) as there is so little storage space.

Service: Very efficient and well thought out lettings with good and accurate description of property

Product: The property was excellent - as we were the first guests, everything was in perfect condition. The bedrooms are tight, however the beds are comfortable. The deck/balcony had lots of space for outdoor living and the hens in the garden were fascinating. The host, Philippe was by far the nicest person we have met on any holiday. He gave all of us a spin in his 1930 three-wheeler Morgan, fresh eggs from the hens and recommended a fabulous restraunt five minutes away that we would not have found otherwise. Highly recommended!
