Anything To Watch Out For?

Traffic noise: the house is set back from the avenue de Bordeaux, but passing traffic is clearly audible outside. Noise is less apparent on the main terrace at the back of the house, facing towards the forest and ocean. The road is moderately busy during the day, quieter in the evenings.

The cabin-style bedrooms downstairs (double and twin) are interconnecting, and share a bathroom.

Why Cap Ferret?

Cap Ferret village is one of France's most chic holiday destinations featuring smart boutiques, cafés and restaurants in a low-rise, island-style setting - the ambience is relaxed and casual, where good living matters most. The bay is renowned for its seafood (especially oysters), fabulous beaches, sailing, surfing, lovely cycle trails, some fantastic (and famous) restaurants. An Aquitaine gem.

Modern, well-equipped and comfortable beach house for up to 10 people

Villa des Pelicans is a bright, modern Cap Ferret beach house - in fact a renovated cottage plus contemporary two storey extension - located between the village centre and Atlantic beaches, in walking distance of both, in a large plot of 1200m2.

The house is arranged "upside-down", with the open-plan living area, two bedrooms & a bathroom upstairs, three more bedrooms and two more bathrooms downstairs.

The style is warm & natural, with pine flooring & natural floorcoverings upstairs, and cabin-style wood-lined walls downstairs. The furnishings are modern & tasteful and the interior lovely & bright.

Spacious open-plan living room with large corner sofa (seats 3-4), small flat-screen TV, wood-burner, dining table & chairs (seats 10).

Open-plan kitchen with double French doors opening on to rear terrace. Well-equipped including oven, hob, coffee maker, kettle, toaster, microwave, dishwasher, fridge. (There is a second fridge in the garage.)

East-facing front terrace with table and chairs for 6, plus 3 sun loungers - perfect for morning coffee in the sunshine.

West-facing rear terrace, overlooking the forest, with dining table & chairs (seats 6) plus free-standing gas barbecue. There is plenty of room to move the smaller east terrace table out here too, so 10 people can eat together.

Off the living area is the upstairs sleeping quarters comprising:

  • Master bedroom: 150 cm double bed, chest of drawers and wardrobe
  • Bathroom with bath tub & separate shower; separate WC
  • Bedroom two, quite small, with double bed (140 cm) and sliding doors opening on to the rear terrace

Stairs lead down from the living room. Downstairs is in two parts - the new part (at the front, east side) where there is Bedroom three: a double bedroom (140 cm) with glass door which opens to the front garden, and the second bathroom, with basin, toilet, walk-in shower & WC.

The original part of downstairs (facing the rear of the house) is best used as a family suite comprising two inconnecting bedrooms (a double 140cm, a twin 2x 90cm) and a bathroom with shower, basin & WC. You pass through the twin room to access the double bedroom and its adjoining bathroom.

At the front of the house the gated entrance leads into a parking area for 2-3 cars. The garage is left open for guests, and provides good storage for bikes, beach kit, surfboards, etc. There is a hot & cold outdoor shower on the north side of the house (up the steps on the right pictured at the front).

4 double beds (one 150 x 200cm, three 140 x 200cm), 1 twin bedroom (two 90 x 200cm beds)

Villa des Pélicans is equidistant between the ocean on one side (west) and Arcachon Bay on the other. It's a 15 minute walk over the dunes to the ocean and coastal footpath, and just 5-10 minutes in the other direction to the market, boutiques & restaurants in the centre of Cap Ferret itself, plus the beaches which face the Arcachon Bay. You can pick up the peninsula's lovely cycle trails close by too. (Good hire shop 200m away.)

It is situated on the corner of avenue de Bordeaux and a residential side road. The house is set back from the road in a 1200m2 plot amongst pine trees. Road noise is audible at the front of the house, less so at the back where it faces the forest and is oriented towards the ocean.

The Local Area

The Cap Ferret peninsula is a treat for the senses - the scent of the pine forest, the constant rumble of rollers washing up on the western coast, the salty, slippery taste of oysters washed down with a Bordeaux blanc and, at the end of the day, sitting on top of one of the dunes overlooking the Atlantic and watching the sun go down. Bliss!

All these experiences and more are within very easy reach. It's just 500m west to the Atlantic dunes and the same distance east to the gentler bay-facing beach, and Cap Ferret's centre where you'll find smart boutiques, a lively market, cafes and restaurants in a low-rise, laid-back setting.

From the village you can take a ferry over to Arcachon or Le Moulleau, but you'll probably miss your 'desert island' home quite quickly! Or try a boat tour spotting the oyster beds and bird life of the bassin d'Arcachon.

There's also a charming 'petit train' that runs from the jetty on the bassin side over the Atlantic beach on the other side of the pensinsula; the trip takes 10-15 minutes and, especially if you have young children, is a delight.

Heading on down to the Pointe is a must, the panormic views across the bassin to the sandy wild-life reserve of the Banc d'Arguin and over to the Dune de Pyla (Europe's highest sand dune) are breathtaking. Climbing to the top of the famous Cap Ferret lighthouse gives an even better view.

Nearby cycle trails lead south through the unmade roads of one of France's most desirable addresses, the 44 Hectares, and north throigh teh pine forests to connect the other charming oyster-farming villages up the peninsula. L'Herbe, especially, is worth a visit.

In all, Cap Ferret is a unique and special destination which people return to year after year.
