Aquitaine travel directory - ferry services

The ferry plus car remains a popular option particularly now that the airlines seem to be charging for every extra ounce of luggage.

Taking a ferry to the north coast port of St Malo will leave you with a 7 hour approx drive to Bordeaux or 9 hours approx to Biarritz – no further than driving to Languedoc, Provence or the Côte d'Azur.

St Malo is the best of the northern ports to arrive; failing that, try Caen or le Havre.

Better still, you can take a ferry to Santander or Bilbao in Spain and have a much shorter drive (1.5 hrs Bilbao-Biarritz) along the coast and up into Aquitaine. Brittany Ferries have recently launched a new service from Portsmouth to Santander

Bay of Biscary ferry routes

Because the Bay of Biscay crossing is that much longer, the ferries are bigger and have more activities to entertain the kids, including a swimming pool. There’s also a great chance of spotting dolphins, pilot, minke and sperm whales - the P&O ferry Pride of Bilbao even has its own Wildlife Officer.

For cross-channel ferries please contact P&O or Brittany Ferries.

For the long crossing to Spain there are two operators - Brittany Ferries (Plymouth-Santander) and P&O (Portsmouth-Bilbao)
