In our opinion

What makes Maison Apaiser a great holiday rental

The combination of location (in a village but close to the beaches) and amenities at the house (particularly the pool and large gardens) makes the cottage a very popular choice each year. The owners have two young kids and live here most of the year: this is also advantageous as the house is well-equipped and furnished to principally be a family home.

Best for:
Works really well for families with younger kids because of the safe & spacious gardens, and the fenced pool. Plus it's not far to the sheltered lagoon beaches of Hossegor. Families with older kids will be happy being this close to 'cool' Hossegor.

The accommodation is well balanced between ground and first floors which makes the house popular for two families sharing.

Suitability for:

  • Toddlers - excellent. The owners use this house most of the year & have young kids
  • Teenagers - good for access to Hossegor and the surf. Plus the village has a big tennis centre
  • Reduced mobility - flat plot with downstairs bedrooms & bathroom

Anything to watch out for?
The staircase is open-tread so parents might want to take care with toddlers.

The shower room/WC in the south-facing bedroom on the first floor is not fully enclosed and there is reduced headroom in the shower.

Why Hossegor?
An established surfing resort with a very 'cool' vibe. The resort offers great beaches, good shopping, a lovely lagoon and plenty of activities (surf, golf, tennis, cycling, sailing & more).

Accommodation

4 bedroom family house with generous gardens and pool

Maison Apaiser is an attractive family house owned by an English couple who live permanently in France.

Louie & Amy use Maison Apaiser as their main home when it is not being rented. Consequently, the house has been renovated, furnished and equipped to be lived in all-year-round.

The beamwork is exposed, the rooms open out and the gardens offer a pleasant place to relax and for kids to play. The stonework and tiled floors not only add to the character of the property, but ensure it remains cool when the sun is hot outside.

Inside:

Ground Floor

There are two entrances, front and back. The rear entrance from the terrace leads into the main living area, or séjour. This room is dominated at one end by an imposing stone fireplace. At the other end of the room is a dining area with table for 8 persons. There is plenty of comfortable seating too, with two large sofas. Technophiles and TV addicts will be pleased with the wall-mounted flat-screen TV. It's actually very discreet. A dvd player and hi-fi system are also available - very handy for the kids.

The kitchen-breakfast room is fully-equipped and looks out on to the front garden. Equipment includes dishwasher, stainless steel cooker plus microwave. A washing machine and dryer are provided in the adjoining utility room.

Two of the four bedrooms are downstairs. Both have French door access to the gardens. The master bedroom has an en-suite shower room and wc, and has direct access to the garden terrace and pool. The second downstairs bedroom is a double room.

There is also a family bathroom with wc.

The owners have a private room to the side of the house which is locked off when the house is let.

First Floor

The staircase leads from the séjour to the first floor where there are two further bedrooms – one double, one twin.

The double room comes with en-suite shower room & wc. It enjoys a south-facing balcony overlooking the back gardens and swimming pool. The shower room/WC is not fully enclosed and there is reduced headroom in the shower.

The twin bedroom overlooks the front gardens

Outside:

The house lies a few metres back from the (quiet) road and is accessed by a wide driveway. Gardens surround the house on four sides; the plot is roughly 1 acre.

The gardens are mature and of a generous size, surrounding the house to all sides. The back garden and terrace offer a quiet and private place to relax. The sun is received nearly all day and shade is provided by the balcony above.

In the back garden you will find a 40m2 terrace, BBQ and 8x4m swimming pool protected by fence. There are four mountain bikes available for guests, plus boules. For those really laid-back moments, a hammock is provided.

There is ample parking in the driveway next to the house.

The Local Area: Hossegor (5 kms)

Seignosse-Bourg
A small Landais village just inland from the Atlantic coast. There's a boulangerie in the village centre and a couple of restaurants to choose from. It's great bonus is a big tennis centre in the village. There won't be much to keep you in the village night after night, but that's not the point. It's perfectly situated to enjoy the coast and Hossegor but without being in the centre of the action.

Golf de Seignosse
A water and forest monster of a course ranked in Continental Europe’s Top 50! Very welcoming clubhouse with a restaurant and bar (serving meals midday-5pm each day) with fabulous views of the course from the terrace. The course hotel serves excellent, more formal à la carte meals in the evening.

Seignosse Plages
4kms to the west are the continuous beaches les Estagnots, Bourdaines and le Penon. It's a mostly residential area with a number of holiday homes and apartments. The architecture is not especially attractive but it's the lovely sandy coastline that draws visitors. Popular with surfers and families, the beaches are superb. There are seasonal shops, a bit of nightlife and a Water Park.

Hossegor & Capbreton
The local region of Sud Landes is typical Aquitaine - endless stretches of sandy beaches buffeted by the Atlantic ocean, vast pine forests punctuated by the occasional lake and criss-crossed by a network of cycle trails.

Capbreton and Hossegor are neighbouring seaside towns which between them offer an appealing contrast. Hossegor is the more famous, largely through its surfing heritage. It's a 'feelgood' place offering boutique shopping, great bars and restaurants, world-famous surfing beaches, casino, and a lovely golf course and a beautiful lake for safe bathing and sailing.

Capbreton lives in the shadow of Hossegor but it's the place the locals prefer for eating out and for beaches. It's definitely the more authentic of the two, largely because of its fishing port and daily fish market. In fact, the town thrived in the 19th century as a whaling port and this sea-faring heritage is still very much apparent today.

It also has a charming town centre and market. Capbreton is just more French than Hossegor, if you see what we mean. It remains, admirably, something of a French (and Spanish) secret.

Capbreton sea-front is a bustling place, day and evening. You can walk all the way along the marina and sea-front. The jetty, known locally as l'estacade, offers excellent coastal views. There's normally a few locals here trying to catch a fish for supper. It makes for great viewing!

Like most of the south west coast, Capbreton-Hossegor is something of an outdoor playground. Take your pick from surfing, canoeing, sailing, diving, fishing, cycling, tennis, horse-riding and golf to name a few. Golfers will enjoy the local course, the 1930s-built Golf d’Hossegor. The traditional club house is also a delight. A short drive up the road is the infamous Golf de Seignosse. There are other great courses within 45 minutes drive including Moliets and several around Biarritz.

The whole Aquitaine coast is a perfect venue for surfers but at Capbreton the presence of an offshore hollow in the sea-bed gives the waves here that extra edge. If you don't fancy a go yourself, just sit on the sea-front with a drink of your choice and watch the surfers ride to shore.

Cyclists can enjoy the many safe forest tracks that connect between the towns along the coast. Sailing enthusiasts should head for the Capbreton Marina. Being so close to the Pays Basque border, sporting life also includes the legendary game of pelote; you can watch a game at the fronton in Hossegor.
