Bayonne Festival first week of August - 5 days of mayhem in the Basque capital - fireworks, music, dancing
and bull-fighting.

Marciac Jazz Festival All Year Round - annual festival of jazz held in the bastide village of Marciac
deep in Gascony. Blissful summer evenings and a vibrant atmosphere.

Alternatively, in the French Basque Country, the Basque Coast Music Feestival celebrates it's 50th year in 2010. From late August to mid September you can enjoy performances in Bayonne, Saint Jean de Luz and Ciboure.

Vinexpo 2011 June 2011 - the bi-annual wine trade festival held in Bordeaux. Also, 24-27 June 2010 is the Bordeaux Wine Festival, the Fête le Vin. You can buy a tasting pass to sample the range of wines from the Aquitaine region.

Or try the Armagnac Festival 25-26 October at Labastide d'Armagnac and celebrate the oldest brandy in France. Markets, food and fun events too.

Cheese Festival in the Pyrenees 27 July in Etsaut. This area of the Pyrenees produces some of Aquitaine's most famous cheeses, notably those made from a mix of sheep milk and cows milk. The locals eat it with a black cherry or quince jam. You must do the same.

For something really quirky, how about visiting the Moncrabeau Liars Festival on 3 August. Something of a Gascon tradition, the festival welcomes international fibbers one of whom will be crowned the King of Liars. Bizarre.
