Chateau de salles holiday park 2 bedroom lodge

In Our Opinion :
Set in the pine forests of the Parc Régional des Landes de Gascogne, Château de Salles is an 18 hectare park consisting of 100 villas. The park has been planned in such a way as to provide private space for each villa but without being too far from the main facilities.

The lodges are spacious, simply furnished but comfortable, and there are good facilities for families including swimming pool, tennis courts, play area and bar/restaurant. This is one of our most popular destinations for family groups who are looking for something authentic and 'low-key' compared to typical holiday villages.

The park is in Salles, a small Girondine town in the forests of Gascony. The 18th century château is adjacent to the park. The village centre is about a 10 minute walk.

Salles is some 50 kms south west of Bordeaux and is half-an-hour’s drive from Arcachon.

Bordeaux airport is only a 45 minute drive and there is a TGV station in the city (3.5 hours from Paris).

Accommodation :

Château de Salles is a holiday park of 100 houses. The houses were developed by a Dutch company with a northern European audience in mind and so the accommodation is much more spacious than the typical family holiday venue.

The houses are quite simply furnished, modern and with good living space.

2 BEDROOM LODGE

The 2 bedroom lodge offers 90 square metres of living space. The open-plan living area consists of lounge, dining area, kitchen and wc. The salon has a chimney, two 2-seater sofas, TV, private telephone and cd player. The dining room provides seating for 4. The kitchen is equipped with dishwasher, microwave, fridge freezer, electric hob with 4 rings, coffee maker, kettle and breakfast bar. (There is no oven.)

The rest of the accommodation comprises 1x bedroom with balcony, 1x bedroom plus a bathroom (bath, shower, wc and wash-hand basin). The beds are singles (90cm) but can be pushed together to make a double. Some properties have a 2nd wc.

The lodges have small gardens, patio area, garden dining table & chairs and built-in BBQ.

2 bedroom lodges can be single storey or duplex (two levels).

3 BEDROOM LODGE

As above, plus: larger living/kitchen area and an extra bedroom and 2nd wc. Total area: 120m2.

3 bedroom lodges are always on two levels.

N.B. There are now also 6x villas with private pools available at Chateau de Salles;
3 bedroom villa with private pool at Chateau de Salles
4 bedroom villa with private pool at Chateau de Salles

Guide :

Château de Salles is ideally located for indulging in a range of outdoor activities and for day-trips slightly further afield…Bordeaux, Biarritz and the numerous vineyards of the Gironde, for instance.

Salles itself is a pleasant town which provides all the essential local shops plus a bar and hotel-restaurant.

The nearest ocean beaches can be found at Biscarrosse and Arcachon. The surf is quite powerful on the coast but the great thing is there are plenty of freshwater lakes – with sandy beaches – for safer bathing, watersports and generally relaxing. Etang de Cazaux et de Sanguinet and Domaine Departemental de Hostens are both only 20 minutes’ drive.

Arcachon is a popular French resort and provides plenty of options for visitors. Ferries run from Arcachon to a host of destinations including Cap Ferret, a stylish resort on the other side of the Basin, and to the beautiful Banc d’Arguin, a sand-bank nature reserve. The Banc d’Arguin sits at the foot of the famous Dune du Pilat which at over 100 metres is the largest sand dune in Europe. A journey to the summit (try it without the staircase provided!) is a must; sunrise and sunset are the best times.

Golfers are spoilt for choice; there are three great courses in the area, (Arcachon, Biscarrosse and Gujan Mestras (the latter has been used on the European PGA Tour); reception staff will book tee-times and gain green-fee discounts of up to 20% for you.

There are numerous cycle tracks and opportunities for horse-riding. The River Leyre runs close by to the Château and is a popular waterway for canoeing/kayaking - there are several canoe hire shops in the town. To try your hand at surfing head to Biscarrosse-Plage or for sailing try Arcachon. For children, Zooland and Aqualand are on the road into Arcachon.

If you’re feeling ‘beached out’ why not take the opportunity to explore some of the region’s vineyards, such as Margaux, Lafite, Sauternes or Mouton Rothschild. For guests who really enjoy their wine, we have a local contact who can organise private visits to some of Bordeaux’s finest châteaux; this could be your chance to sample a selection of grand cru wines.

The city centre of Bordeaux is an hour away and is a good option for a day-trip, whether it’s boutique shopping, sight-seeing or culture. Walking around the 18th century old town centre (Quartier St. Pierre), you can begin to imagine the city’s commercial and maritime past.

Further south, Biarritz and Bayonne are worth visiting. Both are very different but provide a good introduction to the Pays Basque culture and the Pyrénéan landscape bordering Spain.

The Reception Desk at the Château also carries a range of tourist information and will be happy to help and advise.
