In Our Opinion...

A new holiday venue in the heart of Les Landes pine forest, adjacent to the beautiful Aureilhan lake and just 10km by car or bike to the sandy Atlantic beaches of Mimizan Plage.

The local area is a fantastic combination of freshwater lakes, maritime pine forest and Atlantic ocean. This is summer-holiday territory at its best!

Les Terrasses du Lac would suit families on a budget who enjoy camping or mobile home holidays, but who will appreciate a little more comfort.

Accommodation

The apartments are situated opposite the lake in a very tranquil area. The apartments form two circles with the swimming pool located in the inner circle.

All units are painted white on the lower half and have a wooden fascia on the top-half.The decor throughout all apartments is modern and plain, but practical. Most apartments are on one level, some are duplex.

Accommodation is compact yet comfortable and priced accordingly. The apartments are best suited to families on a budget who are happy to use sofa-beds. Also, this accommodation is best-suited to guests who won't mind the limited catering facilities - apartments have a microwave oven/grill rather than a conventional oven.

About Aureilhan & Mimizan

Aureilhan is a charming village close to Mimizan in the heart of Les Landes forest. Aureilhan lake is classified as a reserve and here you will discover plenty of bird life from a variety of species. The lake area is very attractive and at the far side there is a sandy beach with watersports and children's play area.

A great way to enjoy the Aureilhan area is to hire bikes and take the many cycle paths near the lake and ocean. Take a picnic and enjoy lunch in the lakeside forest.

Mimizan-Plage enjoys an enviable setting where the pine forests give way to sand dunes and the rolling surf of the Atlantic Ocean. There's 10km of sandy beaches to enjoy here but the reality is that the sand continues, unbroken, north and south for a long, long way.

Leisure activities on the lake and nearby (NB some activities are seasonal - July & August only):
Sailing, canoe & pedal boat
Sea-kayak
Horse-riding
Tennis courts
• Altantic beach surfing & body-boarding (beach is supervised in July & August only). Surf Schools at Mimizan Plage
Fishing
Petanque
Cycle paths

In Mimizan-Plage, there is a covered market every day in summer and in the main town Mimizan-Bourg there is a market every Friday all year round - this is a great way to enjoy French life.

The Region
Suggestions for day-trips include:

• Arcachon. This popular and stylish French favourite provides plenty of options for visitors. Ferries run from Arcachon to a host of destinations including Cap Ferret, a smart resort on the other side of the Bassin d’Arcachon and to the beautiful Banc d’Arguin, a sand-bank nature reserve. The Banc d’Arguin sits at the foot of the famous Dune du Pilat which at over 100 metres is the largest sand dune in Europe. A journey to the summit (try it without the staircase provided!) is a must; sunrise and sunset are the best times.

Back into Arcachon, stroll along the seafront or through the delightful Ville d’Hiver (Winter Town) and explore its fabulous collection of eclectic villas. There is also a lovely park to cool off in the shade and watch the locals play petanques. The Bassin d’Arcachon is packed full of oyster farms and you will have no difficulty finding a supply of these slimy crustaceans to dine on in one of the town’s many seafood restaurants.

• Biarritz and St Jean de Luz. An hour’s drive south are the sophisticated resorts of Biarritz and St Jean de Luz, the south Atlantic’s riposte to the Côte d’Azur. Both provide excellent beaches, cuisine and up-market shopping as well as a good introduction to the Spanish-influenced Pays Basque. If you have time, drop into the regional capital, Bayonne. Famed for its ham and its chocolates, Bayonne was under English rule for 300 years. It is much under-rated and worth a trip to see its cathedral and walk its ancient streets.

• Spa or Thalassotherapy. In France, the south west is known for its rejuvenating waters, both salt and fresh varieties. Dax is the official spa capital of France and is a 40 minute drive. The Côte Basque – Hendaye, St Jean de Luz and Biarritz - is home to numerous thalassotherapy centres.

• Vineyards. If you’re feeling ‘beached out’ why not take the opportunity to explore some of the region’s vineyards? The famous Graves and Sauternes vineyards are an hour’s drive north east in the direction of Bordeaux and Langon.
