In our opinion

What makes Villa des Azalées a great holiday rental

Villa des Azalées is perfectly situated in the dense pine forests between the lake of Hossegor and the ocean, yet only a short walk into the centre of this compact, stylish town. Villas in this area rarely come up for rental and it is little surprise to see this house rent so easily throughout the year.

Best for:
Beach-loving families and couples who want a comfortable base and very good access to the ocean and town.

Suitability for:

  • Toddlers - good: small enclosed front garden and quiet residential road.Cot (& cot linen) and high chair available.
  • Teenagers - older children will love Hossegor and appreciate the independence of being able to walk to town and beach
  • Reduced mobility - level entrance to the house, however bedrooms & bathroom are upstairs.

Anything to watch out for?
The owner lives in the next-door property, she is available to share her local knowledge otherwise will live you in complete privacy

Why Hossegor?
Hossegor is a an attractive and stylish town with plenty of activities, shopping and places to eat to offer, like so much of Aquitaine, and is especially associated with surfing, rivalling Biarritz as France's surf capital. The lovely residential area between the lagoon and ocean (the location for Villa des Azalées) is particularly sought-after.

Accommodation

Clean, modern 2-bedroom villa, walking distance to the ocean

The immaculate front lawn and colourful shrubs set the tone for what is a very well-presented and cheerful home. The combination of whitewashed walls and deep red timber shutters provides a stunning picture, especially when contrasted against the bright blue sky and dark greens of the forest.

The interior is clean and modern with its hard floorings and new furnishings. The owner, Nicole, lives next door and takes much pride in the presentation of the villa for clients.
Villa des Azalées is available throughout the year. It is centrally heated and life remains in the town even in the low season. The Basque Country and its larger towns of Biarritz, Bayonne and St Jean de Luz, welcome the low season visitor with a wide range of attractions.

Inside:

The ground floor consists of a large kitchen, downstairs wc and large living room. The kitchen is newly-appointed and is equipped with dishwasher, oven and hob, microwave, fridge freezer; the washing machine is located in the garage.

The lounge is spacious and comfortable. It is open-plan in design with furnishings including sofa, chairs, dining table and coffee table. A TV and vcr is provided for guests. A wooden staircase leads to the first floor.

There are two double-size bedrooms upstairs; one has a double and the other a double plus single bed. Both are very light and airy, have hard floorings and offer plenty of storage.

The main bathroom is upstairs and includes shower and wc.

Outside:

There is small driveway at the front of the property for parking one car. Additional parking space is available immediately outside of the property. At the front of the house is a small lawned garden and to the rear is a small courtyard area where a table and BBQ are provided. The back yard adjoins Nicole’s property next door, but guests are afforded plenty of privacy. There is also plenty of garden furniture available for taking it easy outside.

Beyond the courtyard is something of a ‘well-tended wilderness’ – if there is such a thing! This area is only small but heavily wooded and is steeply sloped. It's a bit of a favourite for youngsters who like to go exploring for red squirrels and birdlife.

A French-style baby cot is available on request.

The Local Area: Hossegor

The local region of Sud Landes is typical Aquitaine - endless stretches of sandy beaches buffeted by the Atlantic ocean, vast pine forests punctuated by the occasional lake and criss-crossed by a network of cycle trails.

Capbreton and Hossegor are neighbouring seaside towns which between them offer an appealing contrast. Hossegor is the more famous, largely through its surfing heritage. It's a 'feelgood' place offering boutique shopping, great bars, nightlife and restaurants, world-famous surfing beaches, casino, and a lovely golf course plus a beautiful lagoon for safe bathing.

Capbreton lives in the shadow of Hossegor but it's the place the locals prefer for eating out and for beaches. It's definitely the more authentic of the two, largely because of its fishing port and daily fish market. In fact, the town thrived in the 19th century as a whaling port and this sea-faring heritage is still very much apparent today.

It also has a charming town centre and market. Capbreton is just more French than Hossegor, if you see what we mean. It remains, admirably, something of a French (and Spanish) secret.

Capbreton sea-front is a bustling place, day and evening. You can walk all the way along the marina and sea-front. The jetty, known locally as l'estacade, offers excellent coastal views. There's normally a few locals here trying to catch a fish for supper. It makes for great viewing!

Like most of the south west coast, Capbreton-Hossegor is something of an outdoor playground. Take your pick from surfing, canoeing, sailing, diving, fishing, cycling, tennis, horse-riding and golf to name a few. Golfers will enjoy the local course, the 1930s-built Golf d’Hossegor. The traditional club house is also a delight. A short drive up the road is Seignosse, a water and forest monster of a course ranked in Continental Europe’s Top 50. There are other great courses within 45 minutes drive including Moliets and several around Biarritz.

Hossegor regularly holds major surfing competitions; the whole Aquitaine coast is a perfect venue for surfers but here, the presence of an offshore hollow in the sea-bed gives the waves here that extra edge. If you don't fancy a go yourself, just sit on the sea-front with a drink of your choice and watch the surfers ride to shore. Surfing visitors will also want to visit the outlet centre at Soorts where the major brands have factory stores selling boards, accessories and clothing.

Cyclists can enjoy the many safe forest tracks that connect between the towns along the coast. Sailing enthusiasts should head for the marina. Being so close to the Pays Basque border, sporting life also includes the legendary game of pelote; you can watch a game at the fronton in Hossegor.
