Aquitaine mountain holidays

Pyrenees

The Pyrenees are often over-looked as a destination, the Alps being much better known. However, this mountain chain offers a superb summer destination and is not far from the coast for a varied and exciting split-centre holiday.

Where will I find the mountains?

The Pyrenees chain forms the border between France and Spain, stretching several hundred kilometres from the Atlantic to the Med.

Aquitaine borders the mountains on the western fringe of the Pyrenees. Hendaye is where the mountains meet the sea. The highest peaks lie to the east: Pic du Midi and Pic d'Anie are two of the more famous (2500m).

What's so special about the Pyrenees?
Aquitaine, particularly the southernmost part - the Pays Basque - is one of few places in the world that can combine beach holidays and mountain holidays.

The Pyrenees are special for several reasons:

Uncrowded - unlike the Alps, and less developed too
Fantastic hiking trails
Spectacular scenery - forests, gorges, waterfalls
Graded mountain biking trails
Rafting, canyoning, rock-climbing, etc
Wonderful wildlife-spotting, particularly birds of prey
Less expensive than the Alps!
Proximity of Spain - two countries in one walk!
