Aquitaine's 'Great Lakes' offer a fantastic environment for summer holidays, whether as an alternative to the ocean, or as an additional option for a day out.

Where will I find the lakes?
The lakes are found pretty much along the whole length of Aquitaine. Starting at the northern tip in the Medoc Bleu, right down to the Sud Landes, there is a vast network of freshwater lakes.

In addition to the above lakes, there are also fantastic tidal sea lagoons at Hossegor, Vieux Boucau and Arcachon. The Bay of Arcachon is particularly impressive.

What's so special about the lakes?
"Lakes" does not necessarily conjure up images of sandy beaches and warm water - especially if you're from the UK! The 'Great Lakes' of Aquitaine could not be more different - here's a few reasons why they make such an enjoyable holiday destination.
