Family Holiday Sites in Aquitaine, south west France

FHS010 Résidence Le Mail Plage,
La Couarde, Ile de Ré
holiday residence in the local style, a short walk to beach & village square

Three Reasons to Choose Le Mail Plage
250 metre walk to sandy beach
Indulge in Ré's wonderful boutiques, brocantes & restaurants
Easy access to the cycle paths criss-crossing the island
In Our Opinion...
Le Mail Plage is our first venture on to the chic and charming island paradise, Ile de Ré. We first came here on holiday in 2006 and even though it's slightly north of our core territory of Aquitaine, we knew Ré was too good not to incorporate into our programme.

It's easy to see why the island has become such a favourite. Blessed by a sunny, warm climate, development is carefully protected and there's a laid back charm to holidays here. And it's definitely a case of "two wheels good, four wheels bad" - the island's many pleasures are best enjoyed by bike.

Discover Ile de Ré
Ile de Ré Tourist Office

Ile de Ré is a narrow island some 30kms long, with an almost completely flat landscape. It is fringed by sandy beaches on the south side, oyster farms and inlets on the north side plus a couple of glorious harbours - St Martin and La Flotte.

Despite its recent growth as a chic holiday resort, the island still boasts a thriving working life - oysters, mussells, wine and asparagus are the chief products of the island.

The island's culture and charm continues to thrive despite the influx of tourists (to be fair, it's really only August when things get a bit mad). This has undoubtedly been aided by the restriction on developments to two-storeys and the requirement to follow the island's architectual style: whitewashed walls, green-painted shutters and curly terracotta tiles.

The flat landscape makes it easy-going for cyclists and there are stacks of bike hire shops - as well as cycle paths. It really is the best way to enjoy the island. There's also opporutinities for sailing, windsurfing and occasionally surfing too.

» St Martin de Ré - the island's capital - is a mecca for beautiful people. Most arrive by yacht and spend a few idle hours indulging in the harbour's seafood restuarants and brocantes (do we sound jealous?). If ever St Martin de Ré is too crowded, La Flotte is a smaller, less well-known version and not to be missed.

» Aside from La Flotte, the best beaches are on the south at La Couarde, Le Bois and Sainte Marie de Ré.

» The lighthouse Phare des Baleines is worth a detour too - the views are wonderful and the clear waters will lure you in for a swim soon after!

» Buy a plan of the island from the tourist information centre and cycle to Ars en Ré. Follow the track around the salt marshes into the pleasant village square for refreshments.
